Endorsement Licensure Without Further Examination:
- Licensed in good standing in another jurisdiction. Qualifications must be substantially equivalent to those currently required of applicants OR if at the time of initial licensure met the requirements for licensure then in existence in Colorado
Licensure by Graduation, Experience and Examination:
- Graduate from a Board-approved engineering technology curriculum of 4 years (ABET) or more AND have 8 years of progressive engineering experience of which education is a part. Must be currently enrolled as an Engineer Intern (EI). If not a Colorado EI or transferring EI from another state, must take and pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam before being allowed to sit for the PE exam. Can apply for both FE and PE exams at the same time; however, will qualify for EI.
- Graduate from a Board-approved engineering technology curriculum (ABET) of 4 years or more AND have 10 years of progressive engineering experience of which education is a part. Must be currently enrolled as an EI. If not a Colorado EI or transferring EI from another state, must take and pass the FE exam before being allowed to sit for the PE exam. Can apply for both FE and PE exams at the same time; however, will qualify for FE exam.
- Graduate from an engineering curriculum of 4 years or more not approved by the board OR from a related science curriculum of 4 years or more AND have 10 years of progressive engineering experience of which education is a part. Must be currently enrolled as an EI. If not a Colorado EI or transferring EI from another state, must take and pass the FE exam before being allowed to sit for the PE exam. Can apply for both FE and PE exams at the same time; however, will qualify for FE exam.
- Graduate from an engineering curriculum of 4 years or more OR from a related science curriculum of 4 years or more. Must have 20 years of progressive engineering experience of which education may be a part. Waive EI requirement.
Licensure by Experience and Examination:
- Must have 12 years of progressive engineering experience of which educational study may be a part. Must be enrolled as an EI. If not a Colorado EI or transferring EI from another state, must take and pass the FE exam before being allowed to sit for the PE exam. Can apply for both FE and PE exams at the same time; however, will qualify for EI exam.

- Enrolled in good standing in another jurisdiction. Qualifications must be substantially equivalent to those currently required of applicants OR if at the time of initial enrollment, met the requirements for enrollment then in existence under Colorado law.
Enrollment as an Engineer Intern by Graduation and Examination:
- Graduate from a Board-approved engineering or engineering technology curriculum (ABET) of 4 years or more to be eligible to take Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination.
- Have senior status in a Board-approved engineering or engineering technology curriculum (ABET) of 4 years or more to be eligible to take FE examination. Graduation required for enrollment.
Enrollment as an Engineer Intern by Graduation, Experience and Examination:
- Graduate from an engineering curriculum of 4 years or more not approved by the Board OR from a related science curriculum of 4 years or more and have 2 years of progressive engineering experience. May take FE exam after graduation prior to completion of experience. Engineer Intern enrollment will be awarded after the applicant possesses a total of 6 years of progressive engineering experience, of which educational study may be a part.
Enrollment as an Engineer Intern by Experience and Examination:
- Graduate from high school or its equivalent. Have a minimum of 6 years of progressive engineering experience of which educational study may be a part prior to taking the FE exam and becoming enrolled.

Company Registration
Colorado has no requirements for companies to become registered or "authorized" with its Board in order to provide engineering in the state. Please check with the Colorado Secretary of State for any other requirements in order to do business in Colorado.
Continuing Education
At present, continuing education is not required to maintain or renew a Professional Engineer license.
FE Exams: Computer-Based Testing
In January 2014, the FE exam transitioned to computer-based testing (CBT)and is no longer administered via pencil-and-paper format. Registration is now open year-round and examinees may select the exam time, date, and location that works best for them. Examinees will receive their results 7-10 days after the exam. Intern Enrollment
- Engineer Intern enrollment is valid indefinitely or until a Professional Engineer license is issued.
No enrollment numbers or certificates will be issued.
Communication from the Division: The Division of Professions and Occupations\' primary communication is via email. Please be sure to include your email address on your application to receive important information about your application status and process.
License Expiration Grace Period for New Applicants: All new applicants who are issued a license within 120 days of the upcoming renewal expiration date will be issued a license with the next expiration date.
License Renewal Information: All Professional Engineer licenses expire on October 31 of odd-numbered years.
