New Kimberly park highlights papermaking history

KIMBERLY (WLUK) -- A park in Kimberly is combining outdoor recreation with the area's papermaking history.

Treaty Park on E. Maes Ave. held its ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday.

It's part of the Cedars at Kimberly project which is repurposing the former site of the NewPage paper mill along the Fox River.

The new park invites visitors to "run through the rolls" by interacting with historic artifacts from the paper mill, including grinder and dryer rolls.

Parkgoers can also enjoy lots of green space, an ADA accessible playground and gazebo.

Kimberly community enrichment director, Holly Femal, says plans to build the park started in 2013.

“We’re just really proud and excited to start the development, have positive progress in our community and it just sets the tone for what we’ll be doing in the future along the riverfront as we keep redeveloping Cedars," Femal said.

Treaty Park also connects with Memorial Park to the south by trail and will soon connect with the Loop the Locks trail network in Little Chute, Kaukauna and Appleton.
